Long since the basic trading routes of the Great Silk way passed through Azerbaijan. The country of our ancestors was the “gate” between mysterious China and the rich Europe. During those far times the main transport corridors depend not only on presence of water and food in the stop points of caravans. Caravan highways ran, as a rule, through those countries in which travellers and merchants found out absence of wars and civil strifes, high enough level of civilization and culture, aspiration of local people to trading contacts. All these qualities were inherent in Azerbaijan. Its hardworking and talented handicraftsmen could offer a lot of the useful goods to foreign merchants.
Graceful jewels, wind and string musical instruments, the precious weapon, magnificent carpets, local grades of silk. And what about the natural resources? Merchants removed oil, jewels, salt, mercury, alum, wool, flax, a clap, mineral dyes, medicaments and many other things to the Europe. Copper products especially were famous: utensils, trays, candlesticks, astronomical devices. Skilled masters’s traditions have gone through centuries, and today in Azerbaijan settlement Lagich skilled craftsmen continue to create wonderful copper products, using in their work secrets of the all dynasties. Tourists with pleasure buy hand-made articles in style of “oriental”. Many tourists consider an opportunity to get a carpet of the manual work not less successful transaction, and also the inlaid belt, gold sewing, the sample of wooden architecture, a picture of the Azerbaijan artist. All these works of art are highly appreciated by experts and fans of graceful east ornaments. Today within the limits of TRASECA program Azerbaijan participates in the project of revival of historical transcontinental route of the Great silk way which will connect China and France.
